Virtual Buddy Check‑In
The Virtual Buddy is an optional emotional‑awareness feature for families during the Survive & Thrive Family Skills Day. It pops up once per rotation and sometimes during the event to help kids and grown‑ups share how they feel in a simple, friendly way.
How It Works
The Virtual Buddy uses simple, chat-style messages to check in with you in a quick and supportive way. Instead of filling out long forms, kids and grown-ups share how they feel by tapping friendly buttons. It asks helpful questions like 'How are you feeling?' and 'Do you want your grown-up to know something?' so families can stay connected throughout the event. Every check-in is optional—it’s just a helpful nudge to share a moment of awareness whenever you feel like it.

Your Safety is Priority
The Virtual Buddy is a supportive emotional-awareness feature for families. It is not a clinical program and does not diagnose or treat mental-health conditions. It is designed to be a safe, simple, and friendly way for kids and grown-ups to share how they feel.
- Mandated Reporting: Our team follows Pennsylvania mandated-reporter laws to ensure the well-being of every participant.
- Caregiver Notification: Caregivers are immediately notified if a child expresses distress or safety concerns during the event.
- Legal Protocols: Authorities are notified only when legally required by state law.
- Core Mission: Our goal is simple: promoting emotional awareness and maintaining a supportive, safe environment for all families.
When It Appears
Start of Each Rotation
The Virtual Buddy greets families right at the start of a rotation to check on everyone's energy and feelings as the activity begins.
During the Rotation
It may appear once more during a rotation to provide a supportive touchpoint for kids and grown-ups to share how they are doing.
End of the Rotation
A final check-in happens at the end of each session, ensuring everyone has had a chance to express themselves before moving on.
This schedule keeps data manageable and protects family privacy, focusing only on the most helpful emotional touchpoints during the event.
Step 1: Tap to Check-In
When the Virtual Buddy pops up, children and adults simply tap the screen to share a quick update on how they are doing. It takes just a few seconds.
How Families Use It
Designed to be quick and supportive, the Virtual Buddy helps families stay emotionally connected throughout the event.
Step 2: Share Feelings
Families can choose from simple options like 'I’m good', 'I’m unsure', or 'I’m having a hard moment'. Clear buttons replace complex forms.
Step 3: Notify Caregiver
Through the system, a short message can be sent to their caregiver to ask for a check‑in or simply let them know how things are going.
Support & Connection for Caregivers
The Virtual Buddy system helps families stay connected throughout the event. You may receive a notification if your child asks for a check-in or expresses a hard moment, ensuring you can provide support when it's needed most. Privacy is essential; all communications are private and used exclusively for safety and emotional awareness.
Volunteers
Our volunteers are trained and ready to support families during the Survive & Thrive event. They help create a safe space by focusing on emotional awareness while following specific safety protocols.
Basic Flag Access
Volunteers see only basic flags. This keeps data manageable and protects your family's privacy throughout the session.
Red Flag (Caregiver Needed)
A red flag means a child needs a caregiver. Our volunteers immediately follow protocols to notify the family.
Yellow Flag (Attention Needed)
Yellow flags mean a child may need extra attention or a supportive check-in during the rotation.
Non-Clinical Support
Volunteers do not provide clinical support or treatment. Their role is to facilitate supportive communication and event flow.
Follow Safety Protocols
Every volunteer follows strict safety protocols and Pennsylvania reporter laws to protect every child's wellbeing.
Emotional Awareness
The goal is to help kids share how they feel. Volunteers ensure these simple check-ins happen smoothly and safely.
Rotation Group Assignments
Families receive their rotation group after registration closes. The Virtual Buddy activates once groups are assigned, and the exact event location is sent only to registered families. This ensures a safe and organized experience for everyone.
